What is Pallet Racking?
A pallet racking system is a multi or single-level structure used to support high stacking of palletized load or single items.
It is a fundamental part of any practical storage, distribution, and material handling warehouse. The system allows for rapid and efficient access to stored material.
Pallet racks also maximize the store’s space while simplifying merchandise requirements and offer a safer working environment.
They are made of horizontal load beams and vertical upright frames designed to allow easy holding of specific types of loads.
These models come in different types, including:
- Selective Racking
Selective racks are popular and versatile models and are what people think of when taking pallet racking.
It is a metal shelving for fitting pallets that can increase the space by 40%.
- Drive-In Racking
Drive-in racks get their name from how the forklift get into the system when lifting them – they drive into the racking.
They are lanes with rails on two sides, and the pallets rest and get pushed on these paths.
- Cantilever Racking
Cantilever racks are simple and are mainly for long or over-sized merchandise, like pipes and timbers.
They come as a base for supporting arms with protruding sections instead of shelves or rails.
- Pushback Racking
Push back pallet racks are identical to the drive-in systems, except that they are designed to enable pallets’ easy pushing.
Pallets at the back of a drive-in model stay at the rear while those of a pushback system is pushed to the front.
- Pallet Flow
Pallet or carton flow racks resemble a pushback model in that the material is pushed. However, the system makes use of rollers and gravity force.
You load the products from the back.
How Wide is Pallet Racking?
Choosing the perfect size of your pallet rack system can save you money and make your workstation safer while increasing efficiency.
That means determining the width, height, and depth of the standard selective pallet racking system. Below is a guide of how you can find the ideal dimensions of your system:
- Determining the Bay Width
A standard pallet is 1000mm wide. In most cases, a forklift requires a width of 125mm between the frame and the rack.
It requires a 150mm width between the rack for a double-wide bay. The ideal beam length or bay width would then be (2x1000mm +125mm + 150mm + 125mm) = 2400mm.
- Determining Upright Rack Depth
The standard setting requires the upright depth to be 6-inch or about 152mm less than the pallet depth.
A standard pallet rack is 1200mm deep. The pallet should overhang the beams by about 75mm, both at the system’s front and back.
The ideal depth should be 1200mm – (75mm + 75mm) = 1050mm deep upright.
- Determining Upright Rack Height
You need a 100mm minimum lift for your forklift to collect and unload the pallet in a rack system.
That means you should add 100mm to the height of the material you want to lift and add it to the pallet height to get the perfect size for every beam level.
For instance, if you want to lift a 1000mm tall load, you add the 100mm for lift-off to get a clear height of 1100mm.
You add this figure to the load beam’s height; let assume a 100mm high x 2400mm long beam. We add 100mm and 1100mm to get 1200mm.
Note: You can customize the size to meet your needs and your structure’s measurements. The pallet systems also come in all heights, widths, and depths.
What is Selective Pallet Racking?
The selective pallet model is the most common kind of warehouse rack system. It offers the least storage capacity, but it is also the most affordable for every square meter of racking.
The system is quite simple and provides access to all pallets. Besides, it is popular due to its adaptability and adjustability.
The selective pallet racking comes in either of the following configurations: a structural bolt-together version and a clip-in or roll-formed version.
- Roll-formed system. It comes in a slot hole design, and the pallets rest horizontally on the load beams.
- Structural rack. It is like the roll-formed model, with the only difference being that the horizontal load beams are fixed to the uprights using bolts. It can hold more weight.
Some of the standard components or parts of selective pallet racking are:
- Upright Frame
Uprights are made of two metal frame columns joined by bracing that stretches across the two parts or diagonally. These columns have holes in T shape, keyhole, or slot holes to enable the horizontal beams to join and lock-in.
We provide upright of varying designs, sizes, heights, and widths to meet your merchandise’s different dimensions and weights.
- Load Beams
Load beams are horizontal members that join the uprights at different intervals to provide support.
Uprights are constantly under pressure from the load and need the load beam support. We provide different types of beams that connect cross like:
- Step Beams. They are roll-shaped members of 1-5/8-inch steps at the inner top edge and connecting clips at the ends. You can use them to hold wire decks or pallet supports.
- Box Beams. They offer four flat sides instead of the step, resembling a box. You mount them on the upright by clipping them into the slot holes.
- Pallet Support Bar
You can use the support bar with the pallet racking to add protection when the system falls or enables the structure to hold more weight.
They connect from the back to the front of the load beam.
- Wire Mesh Deck
Wire decking is made from welded wire and rests on the pallet beams to create a shelf that adds protection from falling products or pallets.
Most of our decks feature support channels attached to the wire base to boast load support capacity.
- Wall Tie
The wall tie connects the racking to the wall behind the pallet racking. It connects to the upright with bolts and nuts.
Shims go under the upright when installing the rack systems on a rough surface to keep the structure straight or plump.
- Row Spacer
The spacers are placed in a flue section between the uprights to clarify obstacles like building columns or stabilizing the system.
They bolt onto every upright to join them.
- Frame Floor Guard
The frame guard protects the outer part of an end aisle frame on the racking system.
Floor guards stretch along the outer part of the upright and wrap in the front to maximize high traffic areas’ protection.
- Upright Frame Column Guard
The guard anchor to the ground or is bolted to the pallet rack’s front upright frame to offer protection from a forklift.
- Base Plates
Pallet racks feature base plates at every column’s foot to hold the system in place and provide it stability.
- M Divider
They divide merchandise being kept upright in the racking system. We often recommend using the dividers in racks storing wood and vertical storing items.
- Drum Coil Bed
They fit on the rack system and help to store drums efficiently and safely.
- Fork Entry Bar
The bars are made to fit on the rack system to allow a forklift to enter below the goods being stored at the bar’s top.
- Row End Protectors
You can use them at the end of an aisle frame at a specific height to offer protection in areas with high traffic.
- Safety Beam Clips
They are found on the load beam and help provide a safe beam and upright frame connection.
